Area Game results & Movie Night

Well, the area game results are in.  Our team did extremely well with 39 athletes participating for a total of 39 Golds, 20 Silvers and 7 Bronze in the individual events.  I don’t know what the relays ended up doing but most were Gold.  I don’t have the numbers  allowed for State Meet yet, but we will let you know as soon as we get our quota. The results for the Area Games meet are posted HERE.

Movie night is this coming Tuesday Sept 10th (No Practice) Start time is 7PM –  end time about 8:45PM. We will have popcorn and drinks. We have not selected the movie yet, but Coach Lucky is doing a multimillion dollar study to determine the greatest movie of all time and we will plan on showing that one or something else. Area Games!!!

Everyone swam great at area games. We fought heat, humidity, delays and lack of heat sheets,  but still had six new teams records at the event. Jesse Greve, Jonathon Sady and Gregg Dedic lead the record charge each setting two new team record and winning three golds  along the way. Johnathon broke the men’s open 50 Breast and the men’s 200 Br records both his own and Jesse Broke his own 50 free and 100 free records and Gregg broke his own 100 and 200 backstroke records. Other record breakers included Lori Thomas breaking her 50 free record and Ian Soules busting the Jr 50 free record. All of our A relays, mens and women’s, won gold in both the  medley and freestyle.  We had so many Area Games champions that I lost track of the count, but when we get the official results we will post all the winners. Congratulations to all that swam and see you at practice on Tuesday.

Area Games Saturday

Make sure you arrive by 8:45AM for Area Games.  They are at the YMCA Aquatic Center. Don’t forget your racing suit, goggles and racing caps. Please remember that you must attend area games to qualify for the State Championships.

The World Record attempt was a huge success!  345 swimmers entered the water and formed a human chain across Lake Cane at coach Lucky’s house on Saturday honoring the 20th anniversary of our team at the YMCA Aquatic Center.  Over $7700.00 was raised at the event for Orange County Special Olympics.  Many thanks to all that attended, it was a great moment, and all of the volunteer coaches appreciated you showing up for the support of our team and Special Olympics.

Save the Date 8/17/13 Be a part of history in the making!!!!

This coming Saturday please arrive before 7:45AM
Try to carpool as parking will be tight.
I would like some athletes to come early at 7AM to help man the donation jar (they will be our “official thankers” I will ask for volunteers at Tuesday’s practice.
All of our swimmers can participate, but we will have some as anchors on the land and some will be in the water. Coaches Lucky and Larry will assign you to your groups when you arrive. Any donation checks should be made out to Orange County Special Olympics.

Area Games are on Saturday August 24th at the YMCA aquatic center. Swimmers will be swimming the same events that they participated in during the county games. Everyone needs to be at the pool by 8:15am. YOU MUST SWIM IN AREA GAMES TO BE ELIGIBLE TO COMPETE AT THE STATE SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS.

Here is the link to the area games relays for the MOW swim team. (please remember these are subject to change)

Great fun was had at Lucky’s pool party. Some photo highlights are below.

Gregg Dedic swam the lake before the party.  He now has well over 300 crossings and he is the only Special Olympian in Lucky’s Lake Swim 100 K club. Lucky swam the lake with his son Maximus and his pet duck named Duck.  Duck was so happy he could crap (which he did) having so many folks join him for a swim in the pool.  Turns out that Duck was very upset that he didn’t get picked on a team for water volleyball. Next year Duck, next year. Everyone enjoyed the doughnuts (some of us enjoyed the doughnuts too much) thanks to our volunteers for bringing them in!  Nobody won Lucky’s Says this year so Michael Sarra retains his world championship title.  Michael has decided not to swim this year only  to participate in the parties (I tried this at work – not go to work just collect the pay checks – seemed like a good idea, but the technique must only be successful with S.O. swim teams)

All the cool people played water volleyball. Sorry Duck you are cool too. You can play next year after you grow some arms.

County Games Results

Everyone swam great at county games!

Everyone swam great at county games!

Great job to the swimmers on a very successful County Games!  We had four new team records broken during the event.  Lori Thomas dominated with the record breaking setting two new records Women’s 50 Backstroke 56.6 seconds and Women’s 50 Butterfly 1:08.5.  Lori also tied the team record in the 50 freestyle 48.1 which is now co-held with Patti Sullivan. The only male to break a record this meet was Jonathan Sady reclaiming his 50 Breastroke record with a time of 51.5.

Everyone had a great meet and we are proud of them all.

Our next big team event will be the Pool Party held at Coach Lucky’s house on Staturday August 10th.  The party will be from 9:30am to 11:30am.  We will be playing water volleyball – don’t forget your suits!

See everyone next Tuesday evening for a great practice!

County Games Tuesday!

Jesse won a boat load of gold medals at the National Invitational. He is psyched and ready to go for the County Games.

County Games are this Tuesday.  We would like everyone to arrive early around 7:00pm so we can stretch and warmup prior to the events.  The meet will be long course (50meter).  Athletes need to participate in this meet to get submission times for Area Games (you must participate in Area Games to qualify for State Meet). County Games will be all individual events no relays. Each swimmer will swim two events on Tuesday evening.

We will need parents to help us time.

Congratulations to Ian Soules who set team Junior records at the National Invitational which slipped by me.  You can see all our team record holders by clicking here.  Swimmers can set team records at non-special Olympics swimming events.  The events must be in a 50 meter pool and the times must be official meet times.  Any swimmer setting team records must provide documentation to Coach Lucky before it can be certified.

Hands across Lake World record attempt August 17th

On August 17th we are hosting a special event at Lucky’s house to set an RPR world record for the longest human chain over a body of water.  This is in honor of the Man O’ War swim team’s 20th anniversary. We are also using this as a fundraiser for Orange County S.O. All donations will be given to our local county S.O.

I would like for as many of our swimmers as possible to participate in this event.  We will only have the more advanced swimmers in the water and coach Lucky and Larry will let you know wether you are in the water or out.  All other swimmers we will use on land as part of the “anchor” to the chain.

This should be a fun event so please mark this on your calanders.

More information about the event is below.

World Record Attempt

Everything you wanted to know about our next big event HANDS ACROSS LAKE CANE.  SATURDAY AUGUST 17TH but were afraid to ask.

First let me express my thanks to Mi for working tirelessly on this event.  The event started with me saying in the hot tub “wouldn’t it be neat to . . .” the next thing I knew was Mi had signed up several hundred swimmers. To this day I have no idea what Mi has been telling folks, but it seems to be effective.  Below is what I think she has been saying.

What is it?  Lucky’s Lake swimmers will be attempting to make the world’s longest human chain across a body of water.  Our goal is one/half a kilometer.  If we complete the chain the world record will be certified by Record Holders Republic.

Why should I do this event? Well the short answer is why not. The long answer is that we are celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Man O’ War Swim Team (Special Olympics) that trains out of the YMCA Aquatic Center.  Lucky has coached the team for twenty years and many other lake swimmers help coach including our Saturday morning check in guy (Larry Peck) who has been coaching with Lucky for nearly the entire time.  We are doing the world record attempt as a fundraiser for cognitive disabled athletes; so all donations will go directly to the Orange County Special Olympics.

Who can participate?  We are trying to limit participants to those that are veterans of Lucky’s Lake Swim.  We don’t want nice folks that are not skilled swimmers to get themselves in trouble (drown) during the event.  If you have family members that wish to participate they can be part of our anchor chain, which will be on land.

How much does it cost to participate?  There is no charge, but we are asking all participants if they could find it in their hearts to donate a minimum of $10 to the cause.  If you donate an exceedingly large amount of money Lucky promises that he will never force you to watch his pole dancing routine in private. We would prefer checks be made out to Orange County Special Olympics. We will collect money the day of the event.

Can I still donate if I am out of town that weekend? Sure,  give your check to Lucky at anytime.  He will tell you to make the check out to Lucky’s Cayman Island Vacation Fund and he will try to convince you that this wording is a synonym for Orange County Special Olympics.  Please ignore him and make the check out to Orange County Special Olympics.  Also try not to give Lucky cash or he will end up spending it on sweets or magic beans.

What time does it start?  We are asking everyone to be here at 7:45am and we will start forming the chain at 8AM.  Lucky has a scheme for setting up the chain in about 10-12 minutes, but that only happens if he has complete cooperation from his duck, so realistically plan on allowing about 30-40 minutes to set up the chain.

I have swum the lake but I don’t think I can tread water for 30 to 40 minutes? No problem, we have extra swimmers to fill in the gaps of those that sink to the bottom or are eaten by gators and/or the Lake Cane Monster.  Also, we have ordered over 400 swim noodles for folks to sit on.

Will there be food?  Yes, if you bring some.

Will there be music and dancing.  Yes, we are planning on a live band, but the dancing you have to provide yourselves.

Will there be a regular Saturday lake swim as well? Yes, after the chain is completed we will all return to shore and regroup. Any swimmers that are not too water logged can then do the lake swim.

Will there be Special Olympians at the event. Yes, several of our Man O’ War swimmers will be participating.

Where do we park?  That is a most excellent question and we are working on an answer.  Right now we are asking folks to carpool as much as they can.

Can I swim any stroke?  You are going to be a part of a human chain holding hands with two other people. I think you will find it is hard to swim while holding other folks hands.

Will I be able to get a world record certificate?  We are trying to work out the details, but we are not currently sure.

Will there be aerial photos taken?  It looks like we will have a drone taking photos. (Presumably unarmed, but just in case, don’t dress like a terrorist).

May I wear a wetsuit? Yes, if you provide us the contact information of your nearest relative and the funeral home where we should send your parboiled remains.
